Anorexia Nervosa
Eating disorder where people starve themselves because of their intense fear of gaining weight.
Signs & Symptoms:
• Low body weight
• Fear of becoming overweight, even though underweight
• Disturbed body image
• Obsessive exercise
• Calorie counting
• Absence of > 3 consecutive menstrual cycles
• Low self-esteem
• Depression
Facts:
• 90-95% of individuals with anorexia are female
• 1% of female adolescents have anorexia
• It typically develops in early to mid-adolescence
• One-third of anorexics subsequently develop bulimia
Consequences of Anorexia:
• Anemia
• Cardiovascular problems
• Fainting and weakness
• Osteoporosis (weak bones)
• Kidney dysfunction
• Amenorrhea (no menstrual period)
• Hair loss
